Our love affair with lawns

October 14, 2016 by mccgadmin

Everybody loves a wide sweeping lawn but our love affair with lawns has resulted in several bird species achieving  significant dominance throughout our suburbs.

We’re all familiar with them – large birds like magpies, butcher birds and the Pied Currawong shown below.

Read the October version of “Feather Fascination” to learn how we can re-define our urban landscape and bring the small birds back!

Changes to MCCG Newsletter

September 21, 2016 by mccgadmin

After a long and significant contribution to MCCG as newsletter editor and in many other ways, Graeme Wilson is handing over some of his activities. The MCCG Newsletter will be edited by Dr. Cathi Lawrence from the next edition. She can be reached by email at [email protected]. MCCG Chairman Warren Hoey has provided more details in his letter below:

Support for our Newsletter Editor Graeme Wilson.

Members will be aware of the significant, and far-reaching, contributions made by Graeme Wilson to the continued success of our Catchment Group. During his ten-year editorship, the MCCG newsletter has become an important point of reference, a major source of information on the group and environmental matters, particularly those of relevance to our catchment and a key reason why members join us. Graeme will continue to be an active contributor to our activities for as long as his health permits but, as Dale mentioned in the Spring issue, he has decided that some of the detailed newsletter work can be handed over. We will find a suitable way to recognise Graeme`s significant achievements and contributions. As a founding member of our group, Graeme`s influence has been felt right across MCCG`s many activities. We know he is going to be a difficult ‘act’ to follow.

With effect from the forthcoming Summer edition of our Newsletter, Dr Catherine (Cathi) Lawrence will taking on the detailed work as our editor. Cathi has been for many years actively involved in our Annual Photographic Competition, and is currently a Post-Completion Fellow at UQ’s School of Communication and Arts (and is the elected Vice-President of Alumni Friends of the University of Queensland).

Dale Borgelt, Margaret Hastie and Bryan Hacker will continue to make invaluable contributors to the newsletter. Michelle Johnston (Website) and Janine Nicklin (Face Book) have met Cathi and they also are keen to continue their invaluable contributions in supporting communications within MCCG.

The MCCG management committee will support Cathi in providing a comprehensive list of expert referees and will assist in identifying relevant topics and authors for forthcoming editions.

Please note the NEW email address for the MCCG Newsletter Editor. News, photographs and information for the newsletter can now be emailed to [email protected]. Contributions from all members will continue to be welcome.

MCCG Green Army Launch

September 19, 2016 by mccgadmin

Spring has sprung and there was a decided spring in the step of Federal MP Jane Prentice along the banks of Moggill Creek as she declared the official start of the MCCG Green Army Project 2016-2017.

The Green Army is a team of inspired young locals who revere the indigenous history of the land and are committed to its environmental preservation.

Cat’s claw, Madeira vine, glycine and green panic are all being strategically targeted for controlled eradication by the Green Army around Upper Brookfield, Smith’s Rainforest Refuge and at various point along Moggill Creek.

KIDS DAY AT THE COTTAGE 2016 …
was a hands-on day filled with happiness and fun!
These photos taken on the day show just how busy our clever young team was!

Kids’ Day is so much FUN!

Look what we made ….

Yes, it’s quite safe to touch!
Even got to hold a giant cockroach!

Hand-made beads from pest bamboo – who’d have thought!

Giving life to new seedlings

So many projects, so many things to take home!

 Oh LOOK, there’s one!
It’s fun helping, too!
OK then, let’s go!

Big happy smiles all day long!

Pretty big stick insect!

Not often kids can get this close to a tawny frogmouth!

Ooh, it feels cold ….

…. CAN’T WAIT FOR 2017!!!!
