OUR ONLINE WEED LIST IS NOW AVAILABLE!!!

June 21, 2018 by mccgadmin

WE HAVE SOME VERY EXCITING NEWS !!

Our existing pdf list of “Undesirable and Invasive Plant Species – National, State and Council” has been converted to an online field guide.

Our new guide is in tabular form and it shows which weed species recognized by Country, State and City are known to occur in our catchment.

It includes for each of them (with few exceptions) a photograph taken in or near our catchment, together with hints for recognition and control methods and links to relevant sources.

It’s worth pointing out that many species we all consider as weeds are not listed in the source documents for our new list.  So they have not been included.  Conversely, some species which are not invasive, such as Oleander, are included (as they are listed by Council).

Our next challenge is to provide an illustrated table providing local information about these other invasive weeds too!

Photos in the new list have mostly been provided by both Bryan Hacker and Ed Frazer, who are the masterminds behind the conversion.

Any feedback or additional photos you may be able to share can be emailed to: [email protected]

If you are able to pitch in, we would particularly love images taken within Moggill Creek Catchment of:

  • Baccharis halimifolia  (Groundsel bush)
  • Ludwigia longifolia  (Ludwigia)
  • Lonicera japonica  (Japanese Honeysuckle)
  • Impatiens  (Balsam or Busy Lizzie)
  • Schizachyrium microstachyum  (Little bluestem)
  • Nymphaea caerulea  (Water lily)
  • Pistia stratoides  (Water lettuce).

You will find the new guide under the “Catchment Field Guides” option on the main menu.

Or you can click here to open it.

We hope you find it very useful.

More Kids Day photos!

June 20, 2018 by mccgadmin

Take a look at our latest photos from Kids Day!

They tell their own story:  the day was fun-filled and happy, with the added bonus that everyone learned a thing or two about our natural environment, too!

Many thanks to our Public Relations Officer, Dale Borgelt, for sharing her pictures.

Giant cockroaches are ALWAYS a favourite!

CONGRATULATIONS KENMORE STATE HIGH!!!

June 18, 2018 by mccgadmin

“Moggill Creek is greener, healthier and more stable thanks to the hard work of the Kenmore State High School Parents and Citizens Association.”

This is an observation which has been made on the Healthy Land and Water Awards website.

The initiative and hard work of the school’s Parents and Citizens Association has been recognised with the announcement that it is a finalist in the Healthy Land and Water Awards – Water Warrior Category for 2018.

The school has for many years nurtured and protected the creekside areas in its environs so this is a very fitting and well deserved achievement!

You can click here to open the website and read in more detail about the activities the group has been undertaking as part of its Environment Restoration Program.

The awards night will be held on 27 July.

The MCCG is delighted that the school has been recognised and we wish them every success!

Kids Day at the Cottage 2018

June 11, 2018 by mccgadmin

was a hands-on day filled with happiness and fun!

Kids plunged into a variety of activities with a focus on nature.  Senses were on high alert!

These photos show the kids getting up close and personal with the critters in Martin Fingland’s Geckoes Wildlife Presentations.

But they did lots more, too !

They learned about what’s alive and kicking in our waterways.

They acquired new skills – like identifying plants!

Little fingers and minds were busily engaged making bracelets throughout the day.

And little thumbs became “green thumbs” as they potted plants to take home!

And, to top it all off, they all enjoyed a wonderful barbecue!

Thank you so much to Martin and to the many volunteers who shared their time and talents with the kids, from making bracelets to throwing sausages onto the barbie!

We are also grateful for the continuing support of Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund, the Pullenvale Ward Councillor, the Brisbane City Council Creek Catchment Program and Seqwater for their generosity and support.

And we must acknowledge the tireless efforts and energy of our Public Relations Officer, Dale Borgelt, who is the dynamo behind these wonderful days.

CAN’T WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR !!! (Keep it free – the 2nd Sunday in June)

First time photo!

June 8, 2018 by mccgadmin

Paul Campbell has shared with us a lovely shot of a Striated Heron.

Predominantly a coastal water bird, to our knowledge this is the first time a photo of the species has been taken in the catchment.

We have added the photo and information about its size and feeding habits to our Field Guide to Rare and Vagrant Birds in the Catchment.

Many thanks Paul, for allowing us to include your photo.

Abundant in beauty …

June 5, 2018 by mccgadmin

and abundant in chromosomes!!!

The Azure Kingfisher is arguably one of the prettiest and most colourful birds in our catchment. These little kingfishers live across the top end of Australia and right down the east coast, all the way to Tasmania.

An interesting fact: humans have 46 chromosomes in their bodies.

Click here to open the June issue of Jim Butler’s Feather Fascination and learn all about the Azure Kingfisher, including just how many chromosomes their petite bodies hold!

World Environment Day 2018

May 30, 2018 by mccgadmin

Are you concerned about the destructive effects of plastics on our global environment?

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day on Tuesday 5 June is “Beat Plastic Pollution“.

And right across the world, there is a groundswell of many people taking action!

What can you do about it?

Make a start by taking a look at the World Environment Day website and be inspired by anti plastic pollution initiatives that are happening globally!

More info is also available on the United Nations website.

And, closer to home, this growing global movement is being celebrated at a World Environment Day Festival at Cotton Tree on Saturday 10 June. For more information, check their Facebook page.

We can all play our part and maybe World Environment Day 2018 will provoke some ideas about what each of us can do to join the Beat Plastic Pollution revolution!

The Mystery Mulcher!

May 27, 2018 by mccgadmin

Our MCCG Chairman Jim Pope wears many hats! One of them is leader of the Huntington-Tuckett buschare group.

Jim has noticed that during recent weeks a mystery person has literally pitched in to continue his group’s work of spreading mulch at Blackbutt Place Park.

Thank you so much to our mystery mulcher for your efforts!

It has lightened our load considerably and is of great help to us.

ps: if you’d like to join Jim’s next working bee or find another group that suits you, please check our Working Bee Calendar.
