Calling all photographers: Wild West Calendar 2018!

May 4, 2017 by mccgadmin

Get snapping! Each year the MCCG supports THECA (The Hut Environmental and Community Association) with the production of Brisbane’s Wild West Calendar.

Since 2000, the calendar has featured the flora and fauna and remarkable diversity of Brisbane’s Western suburbs, and has showcased the work of many talented local photographers.

The calendars are produced jointly by:

  • THECA (The Hut Environmental and Community Association Inc.)
  • Moggill Creek Catchment Group
  • Cubberla Witton Catchments Group and
  • REPA (Rural Environment Planning Association).

THECA is now calling for submissions for its Wild West Calendar 2018 … so GET SNAPPING!

Submissions are due by Friday 14 July 2017. Please read the guidelines carefully.

You can view the guidelines and submit your images on the THECA website.

… could you set aside 2 hours this Saturday afternoon?

Our McKay Brook bushcare team has a working bee at Kenmore. It starts at 2pm.

It’s very informal and friendly, and the time passes quickly!

We’ll provide refreshments and Mother Nature will provide the sunshine!

Please consider helping out. Our Working Bee Calendar has all the details.

MCCG values the safety of its volunteers

April 26, 2017 by mccgadmin

Thanks to the generosity of the Red Cross, the MCCG now has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) installed at the Nursery. This will improve safety for our volunteers, due to the isolated nature of the Cottage.

The Lifeline View defibrillator has an innovative LCD video feature that literally shows rescuers how to perform each step of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest rescue in real time – in accordance with the latest Australian Resuscitation guidelines.

The colour video is reinforced by loud and clear audio and corresponding text that can be understood in noisy environments. For example, when the VIEW’s audio says and text reads: “Place pads on patient’s chest,” the video shows exactly where to place the pads.

The defib was paid for in full by a grant received from the Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation (OLGR).

*Project Defib is a Red Cross initiative which aims to reduce the number of deaths caused by sudden cardiac arrest by making defibrillators and related training and support accessible to sporting clubs, schools and not for profits across Australia. More than 30,000 Australians suffer from sudden cardiac arrest every year of which only 5% survive. Immediate access to a defibrillator can lead to a 70% survival rate if applied quickly. Project Defib is a national program which enables every sporting club, school and not for profit in Australia access to a subsidised Lifeline VIEW Defibrillator package which includes training and ongoing support. For more info, please visit their website.

NEW BIRD SIGHTING IN OUR CATCHMENT !!!

April 19, 2017 by mccgadmin

SUCH exciting news! Ed Fraser captured this photo of the Superb Fruit-Dove on 18th April.

It was taken at Brookfield and is the first recorded sighting of this bird in our catchment EVER!

Ed believes the bird may have been on its way to the Cape or Papua New Guinea.

There are fifty Fruit-Doves worldwide but only three are found in Australia: the Rose-Crowned, the Wompoo and the Superb.

Now all three have been photographed right here in our catchment!

If you’d like to learn more about Fruit-doves, please click here to open the March 2017 edition of “Feather Fascination“.

Blue in the face!

April 10, 2017 by mccgadmin

You may think you’re familiar with these birds because  you’ve seen them in your garden but how much do you really know about them?

Jim Butler’s April issue of “Feather Fascination” contains some remarkable facts about Blue-faced Honeyeaters!

For instance, did you know that these nomadic birds have resided in Australia for several million years?

MCCG 2017 Action Plan now released

April 9, 2017 by mccgadmin

MCCG has a new Strategic Plan, together with an accompanying list of important actions.

These actions are listed under each strategy, with the intention of ensuring we don`t overreach ourselves in an attempt to do everything that needs to be done.

Thank you to everyone who helped with ideas, debate and plain hard work in putting this plan together. We will use it to guide us and to gauge our future performance.

We invite you to read our Strategic Plan and the resulting Action Plan, and to reflect on our strategies to overcome the challenges ahead.

A simple request for help

April 9, 2017 by mccgadmin

We are passing on a request from Brisbane City Council’s Land for Wildlife officers.

They are seeking help with a stocktake of Richmond birdwing butterfly vine plantings on private and public land throughout the Western suburbs.

The aim is to get a picture of how many Pararistolochia praevenosa vines are out there so they can identify gaps in the landscape to connect up.

If you are able and are interested in contributing this project, please respond to the following questions as best as possible regarding any plantings on sites you know about:

  • How many vines have been planted?
  • How many vines are alive?
  • Age of vines?
  • Height of vines?
  • Climbing plant or not?
  • Overall condition of the vines?
  • Location?
  • Is there any potential planting for more vines?
  • Any other properties/sites that have or may have RBV vine

Please spread the word to any neighbours or friends who may also be in a position to help!

All responses can be sent via email to  [email protected]
